Barcelona, November 17th, 2025.- At the event held in Barcelona, on the occasion of the 15th Anniversary of the declaration of the Mediterranean Diet as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO and organized by the Mediterranean Diet Foundation and the Ministry of Culture of Spain, representatives of Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, Greece, Slovenia, and Portugal signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
These countries have been part of the European MedDiet Go project, which aimed to promote sustainable tourism and the economic development of European rural areas.
A Commitment to the Future
The signing of this Memorandum is a fundamental step in Mediterranean transnational cooperation. The document formalises the commitment of all the participating entities to continue working together in the promotion of the values of the Mediterranean Diet and ensures that the synergies created during the MedDiet Go project are not only maintained, but strengthened in the coming years, establishing a framework for permanent collaboration between institutions, companies and professionals from the six countries.
The Mediterranean Diet Cluster: A Transnational Network for Rural Development
The main achievement of the MedDiet Go project is the consolidation of the Mediterranean Diet Cluster, designed to promote entrepreneurship in rural areas and facilitate the connection between all those entities, professionals, companies, producers and communities that work under the values of the Mediterranean Diet.
This cluster aims to promote entrepreneurship in rural areas, creating sustainable economic opportunities; to connect key actors in the agri-food, tourism and cultural sectors of the Mediterranean territories; sharing knowledge and best practices, facilitating innovation and development; promoting quality local products and positioning Mediterranean territories as sustainable tourist destinations; and to promote joint projects that generate economic, social and cultural value.
The Mediterranean Diet Cluster is presented as a living platform for collaboration, capable of adapting to the needs of the territories and generating real opportunities for rural communities in Europe.
The Barcelona Meeting joins forces for sustainable tourism
This meeting in Barcelona was the last official meeting of the MedDiet Go project, which began in January 2024. The coincidence with the celebration of the XV Anniversary of the Mediterranean Diet as part of UNESCO’s Heritage list has added a special meaning to the meeting, reinforcing the cultural and social value of this initiative.
During this period of time, MedDiet Go has worked on the development of tools and resources to boost sustainable tourism, support the economic development of rural communities, and promote the Mediterranean Diet as a model of healthy and sustainable living, recognized worldwide for its contribution to the well-being of people and the sustainability of the planet.
The participating entities have joined forces to face the challenges posed by global markets and protect the cultural and natural heritage of their territories.
The signing of the Memorandum and the consolidation of the Mediterranean Diet Cluster demonstrate that transnational cooperation is not only possible, but essential to generate real impact in rural communities in Europe. This legacy will live on beyond the project, ensuring that the values of the Mediterranean Diet continue to inspire sustainable, healthy and environmentally friendly economic development.
